Happiness Index 2024

The Top 10 Happiest Countries in the World for 2024 India Ranks 126th

The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental aspect of human existence, a sentiment echoed by the Dalai Lama, who once said, “the purpose of life is to be happy.” Each year, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network releases the World Happiness Report, which seeks to explore and enhance individual happiness, community well-being, social justice, economic equity, and environmental sustainability.

This comprehensive report offers valuable insights into what contributes to people’s happiness, allowing governments and policymakers to identify strengths and areas for improvement in their societies.

The latest edition of the World Happiness Report for 2024 highlights that Nordic countries continue to excel in terms of happiness. Finland has clinched the top spot for the seventh consecutive year, followed closely by Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. These nations exemplify a lifestyle where social support, freedom, and trust play crucial roles in ensuring their citizens’ well-being.

Interestingly, Bhutan stands out as a pioneer in prioritizing happiness over mere economic growth. Instead of relying solely on traditional economic metrics, Bhutan assesses the Gross National Happiness of its population, showcasing a unique approach that emphasizes holistic societal progress.

Among the 143 countries evaluated, India holds the 126th position, maintaining its ranking from the previous year. Neighboring countries have varying levels of happiness, with China at 60th, Nepal at 93rd, Pakistan at 108th, Myanmar at 118th, Sri Lanka at 128th, Bangladesh at 129th, and Afghanistan at the bottom of the list.

The World Happiness Index 2024 considers multiple social and emotional factors beyond economic indicators. It evaluates countries based on six key criteria: GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. This multifaceted approach offers a richer understanding of a country’s overall success and the happiness of its citizens.
